Version1.2: choose the correct controller

The player no longer takes the first connected browser HID. Automatic selection follows controller activity; an explicit device menu can pin the intended controller even when an audio device is also enumerated. Button mappings are stored per controller. Live indicators and a button test show input before delivery. Controller polling continues while paused, and a fresh Start press resumes a focused page without forwarding that same press as a jump.

Version1.1: tile joins and sword readability

The six scenery atlases were regenerated with stricter tile constraints, then fitted to the original edge topology and flat-material masks. Matching original boundary pixels now share consistent generated colors across both unchanged map layers. The browser player adds a large silver-and-amber SWORD gauge that reads actual charge from the relocated original program. It reports ready, swinging, release-to-press and charging states; it does not change charge, attack timing or game memory.

What changed

ImageGen created new title, hero/interface, guardian and scenery atlases. The conversion tools reduce the illustrations to the original indexed formats, retain fixed tile slots and transparency masks, and write bitmap/palette bytes into a separate floppy image. The ending art uses the palette generated by the unchanged original program.

What the engine retains

GAME.X, system programs, music sequences, PCM bank, stage maps and enemy placements are unchanged from the supplied Buster disk. This is a visual edition of Buster with the same game rules and stage layouts. An unused legacy r2/chr1.gri file is retained separately from the active new artwork.

Attribution & runtime

Buster ©1995 E.Hashimoto. Lanternbound’s new visual artwork was generated with the built-in ImageGen tool under COSOM’s direction. Its px68k core is pinned to c7f831fc7ad6892c46f774ce15764644304cb328, with WebX68k host source and a separate browser checkpoint identity.

Verification limits

The release record distinguishes original-code preservation, asset conversion and browser behavior. Opening gameplay, representative controls, audio and checkpoints are checked; no complete campaign or original-hardware comparison is claimed. Generated art is indexed down to the original machine’s graphics limits.
