What changed
The original inventory's Matchbox interaction is now connected to the optional enhancement. It offers an explicit Use or Cancel choice rather than relying on the separate toolbar button, keyboard shortcut or controller combination.
Opening or inspecting the Matchbox does not automatically warp Jake. Cancel on the initial offer leaves the original item screen intact. Cancelling an accepted menu-close sequence releases its input and makes no room request; unrelated items retain their original behavior.
Declining keeps the original Examine description available throughout the same selected item's inventory session, including the native menu transition. The separate Use Matchbox button, M or mapped L + R can explicitly reopen the enhancement. Leaving for the status menu or field, choosing another item, restoring a snapshot or toggling the enhancement starts a new session.
An accepted action lets the original menu settle with its buttons released, closes the original item menus through the reviewed original SNES B input sequence, then waits for a fresh verified field state before making the existing hidden-room request. It does not overwrite native menu memory or force a room change while the item scene is active.
The existing stationary street guide, independent Use Matchbox controls, mapped Player 1 controller access and exact-origin entrance return are retained. An accepted native Matchbox action can unlock the enhancement when older or missing optional guide metadata did not retain that choice.
The original Japanese ROM, SNES core, six-byte transaction bridge, artwork, walkthrough, music and original snapshot envelope remain unchanged. Optional guide metadata continues to use version 2 and accepts older version 1 values.
Verification
Thirty-two production UI tests retain all eighteen prior guide/controller/reader/font/snapshot regressions and add exact original item selection, explicit Use/Cancel, original Examine transitions, repeated selection, frontend and native input-release gating, safe menu closure, cancellation, timeout and queued snapshots. Eight actual raw transient menu states are covered by the close-phase tests.
Nine independent source tests, 549 direct production guard comparisons and three additional raw Examine-state comparisons pass. The production close detector also matches 396 actual native close frames, including 85 transient frames that permit waiting or release without another positive input press.
An actual 94-frame original Examine trace covers its temporary inventory window and eight frames without a strict item context. The Cancel preference survives that presentation transition while the strict source authorization for every Use action remains unchanged.
Eight fresh native first-selection cases test the original menu's release debounce. The source-backed initial 30 native frames and cached-joypad release checks allow the first accepted action to close the menu; four positive cases complete a full room request and return with all 701 persistent entity records and tested story, party and statistics unchanged.
Four native inventory/menu-close and room-return cases cover entries 3, 58, 69 and the hidden room 210. Each uses the original bounded B-close sequence and compares all 701 persistent entity records plus Matchbox ownership, tested statistics, story and party flags unchanged.
Actual focused browser checks use the original SNES Start, Items and Matchbox controls from courtyard entry 1 with no guide-unlock metadata. Declining the enhancement and choosing original Examine leaves the native logo description available without another automatic offer. Explicit M reopens the action; mouse Use closes the native menus and reaches hidden room 210 on the first attempt. Fresh native inventory selection in that room accepts keyboard Return and reaches entry 1 on its first attempt. The ordinary status menu does not offer the shortcut.
Limits
This is an optional browser enhancement to the original Japanese game through SNES emulation. The editable JavaScript recreation remains incomplete.
The original item description remains original game content. The new explicit action is authored by the browser enhancement, and the cartridge bytes are unchanged.
Return uses the original entrance of the area Jake left, rather than his exact standing tile. Older hidden-room snapshots without a recorded origin explicitly fall back to the morgue courtyard.
Physical controller-button, wireless reconnection and universal HID compatibility are not established by automated input fixtures. The complete Japanese campaign and every room have not been played through.
