COSOMGAME PRESERVATION
DEVELOPMENT NOTES / RELEASE 0.1.0

· First website edition

John Madden Football ’93 returns to the browser.

The supplied U.S. Genesis cartridge, a playable browser edition, and a separate archive for its sound and imagery.

The original game

The 1 MB cartridge runs locally through the retained EmulatorJS frontend and Genesis Plus GX. The player includes keyboard, on-screen controls, controller configuration and recovery, pause, fullscreen and volume. The original archive and cartridge bytes remain unchanged.

Game snapshots can be kept in this browser or downloaded as a .madden93 file. Imports check game/core identity and payload integrity, then confirm that the native engine restored the exact complete state. These are full emulator snapshots; original cartridge battery-save persistence is not claimed.

Music and sound effects

All three entries in the cartridge’s music table are rendered through its original sound driver: Title theme, Statistics and Touchdown. The two long tracks use a complete verified native sequence loop; the fanfare retains its ending and decay. Each player offers a repeat switch and MP3/lossless WAV downloads.

The effects archive contains all 53 original dispatch slots, including two short sample-terminator clicks, plus 12 explicit sample-pitch auditions and 16 PSG crowd-volume auditions. Its 81 catalog entries are commands and variants, rather than 81 unique named effects. The exact native audio bank, driver and command tables are included with source offsets and hashes. Contextual mixtures and some event names remain under study.

Original imagery

The gallery contains 630 PNGs, including 35 original frame captures, palette tile sheets, background maps, sprite sheets and assembled sprite layers. The scene set includes title, setup, scouting, stadium, coin toss, playbook, early gameplay, rain and snow. Native VDP downloads retain palettes, video-memory bytes, map attributes and sprite metadata.

The cartridge resource recovery also includes 124 validated graphic containers: 94 raw and 30 compressed banks. All 30 compressed results exactly match execution of the original game loader. Their retained patterns, palettes and attributes produce 54 image maps and 1073 composed sprite-animation frames, retained in the resource download. The 28 resources using external palettes explicitly label their hash-bound runtime color candidates; those colors are not claimed correct for every frame.

A separate byte audit covers every aligned block of the cartridge. That audit also contains code, audio and compressed bytes; it does not establish that every game image has been decoded. The gallery and coverage manifest distinguish each recovery method and record remaining resource work.

Verification and remaining work

The release checks the exact source ROM and retained WASM, runs native snapshot round-trip and invalid-import checks, validates every published media file, and tests the browser player, fresh-page snapshot import, audio repeat, gallery controls and responsive layout. Native graphics are compared against actual emulator output; source hashes and public payload hashes are retained with the release record.

This is original-game preservation, not a completed source reconstruction. A full season, every team/animation and every contextual sound mix have not been exhaustively played through. Physical controller and original-hardware output comparisons remain open.
