COSOMGame preservation

The Matchbox guide joins the original game

Talk to the guide outside the morgue, accept his free Matchbox offer, and use the new shortcut to the original hidden room.

A familiar face, an easier route

The requested guide now appears farther up-left outside the morgue in the original-game player. Click him, or choose Talk to guide, for a portrait conversation using recovered Japanese-ROM artwork. He asks, “Do you want the Matchbox for free?” Accept, then choose Use Matchbox to enter the original hidden room. A new Return outside control brings Jake back to the morgue street.

The conversation supports mouse, touch, keyboard and standard browser gamepads. The original game pauses while the guide talks. Cancel or decline to continue playing. Guide progress is included in browser snapshots and portable exports; existing original-game snapshots remain compatible.

An identified preservation enhancement

This guide, his English dialogue, the explicit Use control and the outside return are newly added browser features. The Japanese cartridge already starts Jake with the Matchbox, but its Matchbox script does not include the Western hidden-room trigger. Accepting the guide’s offer keeps the existing item when it is already owned.

The supplied ROM remains byte-for-byte unchanged. The browser enhancement uses the original engine’s room transition to the recovered hidden room. It does not invoke the retained helper that also changes stats. The guide can be turned off without removing the Matchbox or rolling back game progress. The separate JavaScript recreation remains at native version 0.13.0.

Verification

The pinned Snes9x WebAssembly core was checked directly: the bounded bridge changes only permitted work-RAM bytes and never restores a canned save. A fresh boot of the unchanged Japanese ROM in the actual pinned WebAssembly core verified room travel and preserved all 701 persistent entity records, money, karma, stats, story stage and party state across a hidden-room visit and return. Guards reject the title, introduction, loading fades, native menus and conversations. Browser visual and physical-controller checks were unavailable for this update because local browser use is disabled in Work settings.
