ORIGINAL OPENING MODE1 BACKGROUND PROFILE

map-256-mode1.png, map-128-mode1.png, map-129-mode1.png,
map-130-mode1.png and map-131-mode1.png contain background pixels decoded
from the supplied USA ROM, with original palettes, per-subtile priority,
and display-record backdrop. These are static source images. No replacement
artwork or emulator renderer was used.

SOURCE AND REPRODUCTION

ROM SHA256:
4c15013131351e694e05f22e38bb1b3e4031dedac77ec75abecebe8520d82d5f

From the packaged java-viewer directory, Python 3.10+ and Pillow:
  python tools/render_mode1_maps.py --rom PATH_TO_ORIGINAL_USA_ROM --maps-dir ../assets/maps --output dist/assets

--animation-phase 0 is the default, selecting an original regular-animation
frame. Other original phases 0..3 can be selected explicitly. --flags-json
accepts the complete 256-byte raw original story-counter state.

The exporter independently checks original 16x16 subtile tables, palette
words and every recorded indexed 8x8 tile against original ROM bytes. It
then composes original pieces in order. The regular graphics sets used here
are 0 and 2; selected animated pixels are read directly from their original
descriptor-table sources and original bitplanes.
It checks the source SHA256 before export and rechecks the unchanged original
file afterward. mode1-render-manifest.json records per-image pixel hashes,
selected animation sources, complete display records and code guards.

PRIORITY

The background-only Mode1 order, from back to front, is:
  BG2 priority0, BG1 priority0, BG2 priority1, BG1 priority1.
Each original 16x16 metatile's four 8x8 subtiles retain their own palette,
horizontal/vertical flip and priority bit. Pixel index0 remains transparent.
This corrects the earlier static export which placed all BG2 pixels over BG1.

BLACK GRASS DIAGNOSIS AND EXACT SOURCE CORRECTION

The old map130 preview showed apparently garbled black tall grass. Original
BG1 animated leaves and the underlying BG2 grass both have transparent pixels
in that region. The earlier flattened export supplied a black backdrop, so
those shared transparent pixels appeared black. Original nonzero tall-grass
pixels decode to green; the bitplane data was not corrupted.

Original loader 02AA60-02AA94 selects the nine-byte display record at
080100+9*(map-header-byte5 AND3F). It loads record word+7 into DP27, RAM0600,
and the CGRAM0 staging buffer 7EDE00. Maps128/129/130 select record1 at080109:
  00 17 11 42 17 10 7F 46 11
Its backdrop word1146 is RGB49,82,32 under the export's BGR555-to-8-bit floor
conversion. Maps256 and131 select records11 and0, both with black backdrop.

Source 02AAD7-02AAE3 writes CGWSEL02, CGADSUB from the display record, and a
fixed-color write with no channel-enable bits. All five source records have
the backdrop color-math enable bit5 clear. Shared BG transparency therefore
shows the exact raw backdrop color; the correction does not estimate color
math or invent pixels.

ANIMATION QUALIFICATION

These PNGs select original REGULAR-animation phase0. The original initial
graphics loader uses full header byteC2 in its initial animation-table lookup,
while regular animation setup masks to graphics set2. This initial loader
transient and first eligible animation-update timing are not fully reproduced
here. Do not describe phase0 as the exact initial loader image.
Older preserved indexed source JSONs may retain selected phase1 pixels; they
are checked against those recorded original bytes before the renderer selects
regular phase0 directly from the ROM. Corrected source JSONs with phase0 are
also accepted and independently checked.

LIMITS

This profile renders original BACKGROUNDS with source priority and backdrop.
Actors, sprite depth, animated palettes, ongoing tile animation, waterfall
scrolling/distortion, display windows, scrolling-layer differences and general
color math remain separate native-runtime work. All story flags default to
zero for these five PNGs. Dynamic original Potos piece13 still requires raw
flag16 interval6..15 and its corresponding collision change.
The preserved bulk-export PNGs retain the earlier static-rendering limits;
these corrected opening PNGs do not imply every map is now corrected.
